What Does The Severn Trent Chlorination Procedure Entail?
- During construction any new mains installed must use fittings listed as approved in the water fittings regulations guidance.
- Installed pipework requires a water regulations inspection to ensure that it is located at the correct depth underground. This can sometimes be avoided by using a Watersafe approved plumber.
- Prior to connection any pipe work that is >50mm in diameter requires chlorination.
- To prevent leaks after connection it is sensible that a fully data logged pressure test is performed and certification is provided showing a pass.
- The mains pipe work should be swabbed and flushed to remove air and debris and to ensure full contact of disinfectant within the pipe during the chlorination phase.
- The pipe is then chlorinated to disinfect it and remove bacteria and make the water safe. Severn Trent have produced a specific document detailing their chlorination requirements.
- Once chlorination is complete the main is flushed to remove the excess chlorine and ensure the new mains pipe has similar chlorine levels to the supply water.
- A water sample is then taken and this is provided to a specialist UKAS accredited laboratory for analysis to ensure that it is free from bacteriological contamination and has the correct chemistry requirements to meet the exacting standards expected by Severn Trent Water.
What Does a Severn Trent Chlorination Certificate Require
- The name of the specialist contractor responsible for the chlorination
- A method statement detailing the methodology for the disinfection of the main
- The chlorine levels at the start and end of chlorination
- The chlorine levels at the end of flushing the pipe
- The turbidity of the water at the end of the flushed pipe
- Confirmation that the disinfection has been performed to BS6700
- Microbiological analysis certificate from a UKAS accredited laboratory for E. coli, coliforms and TVC, these usually follow around 5-7 days after the chlorination service.
Obtaining and sending the chlorination certificate separate to the UKAS microbiology certificate often leads to delays as often the water authority can find it difficult to collate all the required information.
As such we send all required documents in a single e-mail for ease of compliance. These certificates can then be submitted to Thames Water in a single shot who will then pass the commissioning and arrange the connection to site.
A Thames Water engineer must be on site to witness the connection. This is to ensure EUSR accredited professionals are completing the works.
